Glenwood Hot Springs Selects Four 2015 Scholarship Recipients

Glenwood Hot Springs has chosen four individuals to receive its annual Glenwood Hot Springs Higher Education Scholarship: Valarie Flores, Kathryn Senor, Mariela Martinez and Jennifer Beauchamp. The $10,000 endowment is distributed among the recipients for up to four years of higher education. 

The announcement of this years’ Glenwood Hot Springs Higher Education Scholarship winners marks a two decades long milestone of Glenwood Hot Springs funding the endowment. The annual tradition began in 1995, and has continued every year for 20 years with the purpose of assisting young people who are also employees or children of employees achieve their educational goals. The 2015 Glenwood Springs Higher Education winners are: Valarie Flores from Glenwood Springs High School, Kathryn Senor from Coal Ridge High School, Mariela Martinez from Coal Ridge High School and Jennifer Beauchamp who is a working mom and has attended Colorado Mountain College. 

The honor and privilege of notifying the recipients falls to Kjell Mitchell, President and C.E.O of Glenwood Hot Springs. “It’s one of my favorite parts of the job,” he admits. In a letter to each of the recipients, Mitchell wrote, “Your achievements make us proud of you. You are to be commended for excelling as a student and as an employee. I wish you the best of success with your future studies.” 

The endowment is for $10,000 which is divided among the recipients and is contingent on each of the winners maintaining good grades and demonstrating a commitment to “being a good student”, according to the award letter. Flores, Senor and Martinez will each receive an award of $2400, payable over four years; Beauchamp will receive a $2800 award. 

Valarie Flores is the daughter of Larry and Maria Flores. She will be attending Seattle University in Seattle, Wash. to study business and law. “The school has an amazing law program that will establish a great foundation for me,” she said. Valarie is a top student and has been actively involved during high school including participation in cheer, track and field, mock trial and many community and volunteer organizations. She is a 2014 and 2015 mock trial state champion and is currently preparing to compete at the mock trial national competition in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her tenure at the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool began in the summer of 2011 when she started working as a pool attendant; currently she works as a housekeeping assistant at Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge. 

Kathryn Senor is the daughter of Monte and Kathi Senor. She will be attending the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. “UCCS has an elite nursing program and it is a small university that is close to the mountains which is an ideal fit for me coming from a small mountain community myself,” she said. Senor is another example of a very involved young person. She has served on student council since 2007, participated in Destination Imagination competitions, soccer, basketball, volleyball, and track and field. She is an avid volunteer helping youngsters at Elk Creek Elementary learn to read and delivering Meals on Wheels to community members in need. Senor is also a Rural Health Scholar and was nominated to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. At Glenwood Hot Springs, she has worked at the Grill and Snack Bar since 2012. Her duties have included food preparation, hostessing, cooking and supervising shifts. 

Mariela Martinez is the daughter of Damon and Julie Martinez. She will be attending Portland University in Portland, Ore. “I am planning on entering the nursing program at the University of Portland with the hope of becoming a trauma nurse,” she said. Not only is Martinez in the top 5 percent of her graduating class, she is an avid athlete with many achievements. She holds varsity, state and league distinctions in cross country, basketball, soccer and track. In addition to her athletic success, Martinez is active in the community devoting her time and talent to worthy causes, examples include volunteering at the River Center, organizing a blood drive at her high school in conjunction with Grand River Health and creating holiday gift bags for children through the Angel Tree project. At Glenwood Hot Springs Martinez has worked at the Grill and Snack Bar since 2011. 

Jennifer Beauchamp is the wife of Bret Beauchamp and the mother of Gweni and Evelyn Beauchamp. She will be attending Glenwood Beauty Academy to study cosmetology. “I have put starting a career on hold for the last 10 years while I raise my two beautiful daughters. But now that my youngest will be starting first grade, I get to go to school while they are in school! I have had a dream of becoming a cosmetologist for quite a few years and I hope to be a good example to my daughters,” she said. Beauchamp has worked for Glenwood Hot Springs since 2011, at the athletic club and pool reception desks. Her duties include exceptional customer service, point of sale operations and knowledge of the property and community.
